God And Country

"I did not enjoy being secretary of defense. As soldiers would put it, I had too many rocks in my rucksack: foreign wars, war with Congress, war with my own department, one crisis after another. Above all, I had to send young men and women in harm's way."

Robert Michael Gates is an American statesman and university president who served as the 22nd United States Secretary of Defense from 2006 to 2011.
His book Duty,  the memoirs of a Secretary at War,  is a strikingly candid account of his experience serving as secretary of defense under, both President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama. His habit of taking very explicit  notes at his meetings lends well, to the book, and it is a very well written account.
